Stabbing victim wins $ 1.2 million judgment
From staff reports
A woman who was stabbed
18 times and left for dead in her apartment was awarded $ 1.2 million by a Fulton
County jury Tuesday.
The victim, who was 20 at the time of the attack, sued the owners of the complex
where she and her mother were living when she was stabbed April 25, 1993. The
jury awarded the woman's mother $ 300,000 in damages. The mother had been assured
the apartment and North Hairston Road complex were safe, when in fact the previous
occupant left three weeks earlier because she was raped there, said attorney
Gilbert Deitch.
Totsy Nichols, an attorney for apartment owners Clover Appreciation Properties
I Ltd. and managers Crown Management Corp. and Allstate Management Corp., said
they have no plans to appeal. "We're very pleased with the verdict,"
Nichols said. "The demand (for settlement) was $ 9.5 million on the first
day of trial. Obviously the jury told us what they thought the case was worth."
